What branded CRO is, and why premium brands need it

Most CRO makes premium stores look cheaper. Branded CRO tests for revenue and protects the brand at the same time. Here’s how it works and why it matters.

Most conversion rate optimisation was built for stores that compete on price. Countdown timers, flashing badges, pop-ups with a discount code, a wall of red sale tags. Some of it works for a while. On a premium brand, most of it does damage you don’t see in the test results.

Branded CRO is the same discipline, run with one extra rule: every test has to lift revenue without making the brand look cheaper. That rule changes how you research, how you design and which tests you’re willing to run at all.

Why normal CRO hurts premium brands

A premium brand is a promise. The price, the photography, the type, the tone of voice all tell the customer this is worth more. When a test adds a discount pop-up or a fake scarcity timer, it can win the week and still teach your customers to wait for a code.

The problem is that a normal A/B test only measures the session in front of it. It doesn’t measure what happens to how people see your brand. So a checklist agency can hand you a string of small wins while the thing that lets you charge more slowly wears away.

I learned this the hard way running my own brand. I founded Bunker Clothing at 19 and scaled it to €1.3M. The tests that looked cheap never held up for long. The ones that made the brand clearer did.

What branded CRO does differently

There are four things we do on every store, and they’re the four pillars of how we work.

  • Data first. Every test starts in a data bank of what your customers already say: reviews, support tickets, Reddit threads, ad comments and your Shopify data. The words on the page come from them, not from a best-practice list.
  • Balance. We score your brand from brand-led to conversion-led, set a target for every page, and score every design against it before it’s built.
  • Design. Every test is designed from scratch in Figma, in your brand kit. If it wouldn’t look right on your homepage, it doesn’t go live.
  • Uptime. A page without a live test isn’t learning anything. So a test is live on every key page 95% of the time, with the next 2 to 3 built and queued.

Balance is the part most agencies skip

Not every page should lean the same way. Someone landing on your homepage from a cold ad has never heard of you. That page should lean brand, because first impressions are hard to undo. Someone in the cart has already decided they want it. That page can lean harder on conversion, because the job there is getting them over the line.

So we match every page to the awareness level of the people who land on it, and give each page its own target. Colder pages lean brand. Warmer pages lean conversion. Every design gets scored against its page’s target, and if it lands too far either way, we redesign it before anyone builds it.

What it looks like in practice

Here are a few real tests we’ve built, all natively in Shopify with no apps. N-Pro’s animated mechanism section explains, layer by layer, how their headguard protects you. It lifted revenue per session by 12%. Sassy Saints’ offer builder lets shoppers build a box of colours and unlock free ones as they go, and lifted revenue per session by 7%. Charge’s subscription cart lifted it by 12%, and Bunker’s cart upsells by 11%.

None of those tests is a discount pop-up. Each one makes the product or the offer clearer, in the brand’s own style. That’s the whole idea.

How to tell if your CRO is branded

Ask three questions about the last tests your team or agency ran.

  • Would you put the winning design on your homepage and be proud of it?
  • Was it judged on revenue per session, or just conversion rate?
  • Did it come from something your customers said, or from a checklist?

If the answer to any of them makes you wince, you’re running normal CRO on a premium brand. It can be fixed, and it usually starts with the customer research, not the design.
